Veterinary patient management systems

Point Of Care Testing (POCT) devices can report key data while a patient is there in the practice, making them highly valued tools for veterinarians.  No need to take a sample and send to an outside laboratory – just do the test here and now, and act immediately.

However, manually keying those test results – which may include many analytes – into a veterinary patient management system (VPMS) can be a painful and time-wasting task.  Identifying and recording the patient, and connecting this with the test results, can also be unnecessarily time-wasting.

OndasVet can make the use of POCT devices a professional pleasure, taking care of these tasks.  POCT devices typically are connected to a local network, and communicate over it. The Ondas Remote Node (ORN) is a small module which connects to the same network, allowing it to communicate with the POCT device.

The ORN, in turn, communicates via the Internet to the OndasVet cloud.

The OndasVet cloud communicates directly with the veterinary patient management system (VPMS).

This close linkage introduces real flexibility and intelligence in the process of Point Of Care testing.  The goal was not to simply pass data from test device to patient management system, but rather to improve the speed, accuracy and user experience of the testing process.  This reflects strong input from veterinarians to reflect real-world experience.

Modes of Operation

OndasVet can support a variety of testing modes, depending upon the capabilities of the device itself.

Starting at the device, the veterinarian may take a sample, place into the device, and start the test.  When completed, the vet identifies the patient.  Depending on the device, the patient number may be entered manually, or a patient list may be accessed.  OndasVet then sends the result to the VPMS in a familiar, standard laboratory test format.

Alternatively, starting at the VPMS, the veterinarian may enter a test order into the VPMS.  The VPMS sends the order, which is received by the Ondas Remote Node, which presents it to the device.  The veterinarian selects the test order, which includes full patient ID, and performs the test.  When completed, the result is then sent to the VPMS.

In a third “walk up” mode, an urgent test can be performed with no data entered, and then subsequently ordered from the VPMS and matched – a unique capability.
